The Old Wymondhamians: Who we are and what we do

Welcome to the Old Wymondhamians, the official link between past pupils and staff and the College.

Every former student, member of staff or Governor of Wymondham College is considered an Old Wymondhamian.

The Old Wymondhamians Committee works hard to maintain contact with all former pupils and staff and also preserve the history and heritage of the College and its previous life as a USAAF hospital in the Second World War. We organise and coordinate reunions, networking, sporting and other social events.

The ‘OWs’ also help raise much needed funds to support the College and students. Please do take a moment to join the 100 Club, where from just £5pm you will both help with fund raising and also have a chance to win some fabulous monthly prizes too. Many Old Wymondhamians are also increasingly considering giving via regular and/or one-off donations and via a legacy in their will.

If you would like to get back in touch with a friend or find out more about the events we are running, I would encourage you to add your details to the ‘Keep in touch’ page or email us at info@theoldwymondhamians.co.uk. We would love to hear from you!

Best wishes,

John Mewse (77-82) – Chair Old Wymondhamians

The Old Wymondhamians Golf Day – Friday 27th June 2025

This year the Old Wymondhamians Golf day was held on Friday 27th June 2025 at Dunston Hall Hotel.

The 18 hole golf competition was won by Mike Herring who was presented with the Bob Rowell trophy.

A fabulous dinner in the evening was attended by over 25 Old Wymondhamians during which the 100 Club Star Draw was also drawn.

A call out to all golfers who may be interested in attending next year’s Golf day. Do drop a line to info@theoldwymondhamians and your details will be passed on to the organisers.

Royal Norfolk Show – 25th-26th June.

The Old Wymondhamians were represented at the Wymondham College stand at the Norfolk Show. It was great to be able to say hello to many former students and hear memories of their time at the College.

Cricket

On Wednesday 9th July 2025, nine Old Wymondhamians attended the college to watch the Boys 1st XI cricket team take on an MCC side made up of young East Anglian cricketing “talent”.

Those in attendance were:-

Phil Robinson, Steve Read, Andrew Ramsay, Robin Postle, Alan Wright, Tim Mace, Adrian Smith, John Watson, Ken Seaman

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and the College PE & catering department made us very welcome and well fed.

Sadly the result was not in the College’s favour as they struggled to match the MCC target of 219 – only managing 125 all out in reply.

July Get Together & 100 Club Draw

The July OW 100 club draw was carried out on Wednesday 23rd July 2025 at The Parson Woodforde in Weston Longville.

Paul Kentish –  £60.00 – resident of Hatch Warren, Basingstoke

Gerry Gunton – £30.00 – resident of Roydon, Diss

As we were unable to have a Tour & BBQ at the College this year, this event doubled as a sort of mini reunion as well as an OW 100 club draw.

The attendees, in no particular order, were:-

Phil Robinson, Steve Read, Geoff Lewis [& wife Fiona], Andy Bowcock, Joy Hetherington [Anderton], Louise James [Hambelton], Jennie Foster [Clarke], William Trevethick, Jerry Linden-Ball, Anne Bradley [Ashworth], Sandra Howard, Joanna Voelker [Bassingthwaighte], Jane Harvey [Bassingthwaighte], John Mewse, Steven Hands, Guy Pettit, Lynne Pettit [Semmens], Jim Alston, Jonathan Green, Chris Parnham, Kay Parnham [Rate]

It is interesting to note that four of the couples first met at Wymondham College!!

Also that there were five members of the 1972/73 1st XV rugby team in attendance.

The Great Wymondham College Getaway  – 16 &17th October

An Autumn Break with superb food, good company and an opportunity to recharge the batteries and mentally prepare for the onset of Winter! If all that sounds like a plan why not join us in a WyCol Getaway this October?  We are headed to Headlam Hall, a superb Hotel and Spa (and more!!) situated on the foothills of the Pennines just west of Darlington.

https://www.headlamhall.co.uk/

All present and past pupils and staff are welcome.

The highlights of this super-break are two evenings of delicious food in a really beautiful setting. Special menus will be created for the two private dinners and there will be plenty of opportunity to work up an appropriate appetite using the Hall’s facilities during the day.

We plan to arrive on the afternoon of 16th October 2025, leaving time to settle in to our rooms and explore the facilities before heading to the bar for pre-dinner drinks in our private dining room.

Friday 17th October is a free day until the evening meal, so after breakfast you can choose from the many opportunities at the hotel or in the surrounding area including:

Spa facilities included in the price (but not treatment)

Rent a classic car for the day – 1959 Jaguar XC150, 2002 Aston martin DB7 or 1966 mini Cooper.

Nine hole golf course – but not par three! An excellent tricky course.

High Force – Britain’s highest waterfall.

Raby Castle

Bowes Lyon Museum

Locomotion – rail museum

Headlam Hall is an easy drive up the A1. Just 10 miles from Scotch Corner. Alternatively you can go by train to Darlington or fly up to Teesside airport. We will try to arrange transport to and from the station/airport when we know who is arriving and when.

We have negotiated special Wy Coll prices for this super event (30% lower than booking direct) and reserved a limited number of rooms which will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Costings                 £125 per person sharing per night

£155 per person single per night

To book just contact info@theoldwymondhamians.co.uk with your details which we will forward on to those organising. A deposit of £50 per head required at time of booking – refundable up to 30 days before the event.
